Energy and the environment

Energy production and transmission have many kinds of environmental impacts. Some of these are extensive in terms of their range of impact, whereas others are regional or local. With respect to the environment, the greatest concerns include climate change, diminished natural resources and biodiversity, and increased amounts of waste. Production methods, consumption habits and the size of population will determine the future direction of energy use.

Energy companies operate close to people and their everyday lives. For this reason, the energy sector is investing in identifying the environmental impacts of production and transmission. These impacts are taken into account in the planning of existing and new production plants.

Environmental impacts are reduced, e.g. by improving the cleaning technology and adopting more effective and environmentally friendly methods of energy production. Efficient production and use of energy is also an important method of controlling environmental impacts.
