Sufficient labour resources for the sector

The task of Finnish Energy’s supervision of interests in matters of labour market policy is to ensure that the member companies have sufficient labour resources available in terms of quantity and quality now and in the future. In addition, the labour resources must also support the profitability and competitiveness of businesses in terms of their costs and availability. 

Finnish Energy aims to promote productivity, for example, with flexible and appropriate working time arrangements and to ensure the competitiveness of unit labour costs. It also aims to increase local wage bargaining agreements, support access to manpower, influences training in the sector and promotes health and safety at work and longer working lives.  

Finnish Energy’s collective agreements are applied in the following sectors:

  • Production of electricity, district heat and district cooling
  • Transmission, distribution and sale of electricity, district heat and district cooling
  • Construction and maintenance of power and telecommunications networks; some network construction companies are members of the Service Sector Employers PALTA.

The member companies of Finnish Energy have approximately 16,000 employees, about 14,000 of whom participate in ET’s labour market activities. 

Wage settlements to support competitiveness in the sector

It is important for Finnish Energy (ET) that the collective agreement and wages settlement support the operating conditions of member companies. Application of the current collective agreement requires bargaining expertise at the local level and courage to develop new operating models. 

ET aims to negotiate on new, flexible procedures within TES, which would be a win-win situation for both the employers and employees. Companies should also be able to decide on their wage growth at the local level on the basis of their productivity growth.

Collective bargaining needs new and unprejudiced solutions to ensure that the labour market can adapt to rapid changes in operating methods in a flexible and efficient way. Wage settlement should support the competitiveness of energy companies as foreign competition increases.
